The harder you push your body during the workout, the more dramatic and satisfying the results. However, you must also factor in and accommodate recovery.

Besides rest, proper nutrition is also required. The lack of proper nutrients after intensive training is the single biggest cause of failure - why you don’t see the results you’re expecting after all those hard workouts. Immediately after your workout, your body has an increased capacity for nutrient uptake, whilst maintaining a catabolic state.

If you get proper nutrition during this window, you take advantage of the increased capacity for nutrient uptake whilst quickly and effectively fending off the catabolic processes. Your body provides you only 30 minutes after the workout to feed it proper nutrition. Once the half-hour window lapses, your recovery time doubles. A large bulk of the nutrients you consume during this period goes directly to the construction of muscle mass. The reason? Your increased capacity for nutrient uptake.

Studies have shown nutrient uptake within this time window increases the muscle-building stimulus of resistance training by up to 300% (1). Getting the proper nutrition within those 30 minutes is a challenge. Normal, healthy food imposes limitations on uptake rate, thereby limiting the possibility of complete (or near-complete) recovery during this short period.

One Recovery® is designed to make full use of this time. We have combined the carbohydrate Vitargo®, the world's fastest-burning carbohydrate (2, 3) with a fast-acting whey protein isolate and electrolytes. All three have unique features that complement each other to a T. Vitargo® is a patented carbohydrate designed to provide the most efficient deposition of glycogen (the muscle’s primary source of energy, and also key to greater performance) in the body.

Vitargo® carbohydrates leave the stomach faster than any other sports drinks’; clinical studies done at Karolinska Institute have shown that Vitargo® fills carbohydrate depots in the muscles up to 70% faster than other carbohydrates (4).

Aside from Vitargo®, One Recovery® also has a small amount of another carbohydrate - fructose. The two differ in their respective structures and in the metabolic pathways they take. This means they do not interfere with each other’s absorption rate. Their combined absorption rates result in the fastest carbohydrate uptake observed: up to 1.5 grams of carbohydrates per minute. (It should be noted that your body can absorb a maximum of 60 grams of carbohydrates an hour. The combination of Vitargo® and fructose increases this to about 90 grams - a 50% improvement in carbohydrate absorption when compared to taking Vitargo® on its own (5).)

This rapid carbohydrate uptake leads to a more efficient replenishment of glycogen, which in turn results in accelerated post-exercise recovery. You can train harder and more frequently without fear of adverse effects (6).

Vitargo® and fructose are gentle on the stomach, unlike simple carbohydrates from so-called gainers and other low-quality carbohydrate sources (6, 7).

Aside from carbohydrates, your body needs protein - lots of it, and only the best kind - to restore and build muscle (8, 9, 10, 11). One Recovery® contains only the most effective type of protein to be consumed post-exercise: ultra-filtered and instantised whey protein isolate (one that packs 90% protein) (12). Whey protein isolate works wonders when it comes to stimulating protein synthesis (translation: muscle-building). One study demonstrated how whey increases protein synthesis 122% better than casein protein and 31% better than soy protein (13). It is no wonder that whey protein isolate is considered the best protein in the market; it packs the greatest amount of protein (90%) and contains zero lactose, fat and cholesterol.

Intensive training requires not just carbohydrates and protein. Anyone who trains hard knows how important it is to maintain a correct fluid balance. This is why we added electrolytes to restore fluid balance and prevent muscle cramps associated with long, intense workouts. Electrolytes achieve this by enabling the muscles to absorb water faster and to retain more fluids in the muscles after workouts.

+ Why do we need carbohydrates for recovery?

Carbohydrates raise blood sugar levels that dropped during exercise. When blood sugar rises, insulin is released. Insulin in the blood activates glycogen storage, so long as carbohydrates are in supply. During training, glycogen is released to keep the blood sugar at a constant level so that the body has energy to perform the tasks required.

+ Why do we need protein (supplements) for recovery?

If you do not get proper nutrition after exercise, your body will break down existing muscle tissue to access carbohydrates and protein. An immediate intake of protein supplements will ensure that your body will never have to consume its own store of protein. Protein supplements spike insulin levels to more effectively deposit glycogen.

+ Is fat required for recovery?

No. Fat is released during and after exercise. You do not need extra fat after training.

+ I want to lose weight. Would One Recovery® simple add unnecessary calories?

No. If you wish to lose weight, your target for elimination is unwanted fat. Remember that muscle cells consume plenty of energy; as such, they use fat and carbohydrates to do so. If you neglect recovery after exercise, your body will consume its own muscle protein. This results in less muscle and lower metabolism. In the long run, this presents you with stagnant weight loss or a higher percentage of fat mass.

+ I do not want big muscles. Does this mean I can skip recovery?

No. You break down your own muscles if you do not go through the recovery process. We need muscles to train, whatever your goal is. “Big muscles” take years of hard work, dedication and strict dieting.
